MARY PROCTOR

Mary Proctor was born on July 11, 1960 in Jefferson County Florida. She is married and has 4 children. In February 1995, while grieving for her grandmother, aunt, and uncle who died in a house fire, she received a vision which began her career as an artist. A sweet voice spoke to her and told her to "paint the door". Since that time, Mary has painted so much that she sometimes wonders what is wrong with her. Anything from her junkyard is a potential surface for her powerful and poignant images. She glues pebbles, sticks, buttons, or broken pieces of glass, mirror, or plates to her paints. The broken pieces which she assembles represent the broken pieces of her life, and the rejoining of them is, for her, a mending process. Mary writes messages across her paintings that she wants the world to know. She sees herself as a missionary and the people who buy her work as the deliverers. Three of her doors are in the permanent collection of the American Visionary Art Museum. We have some of her outstanding pieces, including early doors and even "books" that were created on pieces of metal using found objects.
